Your Alde heating system: a summer guide

A guide to looking after your Alde heating system so that you can enjoy total comfort in the warmer months.

Using your Alde hydronic heating system in Summer

Welcome to another edition of our seasonal guides to your Alde hydronic heating system. In this piece, we’ll be guiding you through what you need to do to keep your heating system working perfectly in the warmer months.

Summer’s arrival doesn’t mean you’ll be switching off your heating system until the colder seasons come back – whether you’re travelling to colder climates during the summer or you’d like a little extra heat or a milder August in the UK, there are plenty of things you can do to maintain an optimal temperature.

Hot water without heating

You’ll probably want to enjoy a hot shower on a summer’s day, but you don’t have to turn on the central heating system in your vehicle to do this. There’s a simple way to heat up your water supply without central heating:

Using your control panel, set your desired room temperature to 4 degrees below ‘ambient’. This will shut off the central heating and stop the heating fluid from circulating and heating the entire room or vehicle. You’re now free to enjoy your hot water without using the central heating.

Using your control panel

Our control panels are easy to use, and we’ve created a few quick guides to give you something to refer to, should you need it:

Staying comfortable

A good night’s sleep is always important, but during summer it can be difficult to find the ideal temperature. If it’s too hot, you might wake up and open the windows to cool the room down, but after a few hours, the temperature will drop too far and you’ll wake up feeling cold. With our Night & Day settings, you can set the perfect temperature for different stages of the day. You can set the room to be warmer in the day and cooler at night, or vice versa.

If you want a cooler room at night, you can use a Normal Mode to set a ‘standard’ temperature for the day, and then set a cooler Night Mode to start at 9pm and end at 6am, for example. At 6am, the temperature will revert back to the Normal Mode temperature.

If you’re leaving your caravan or motorhome for a while and you want to return to a cooler vehicle, you can set a Day Mode to work in conjunction with Normal Mode and Night Mode. If you’re out and about from 10am to 3pm, for example, you can set Day Mode for those hours to maintain a cool temperature and avoid returning to a hot caravan. Outside of these hours, your chosen Normal and Night Mode temperatures will kick in at the hours you’ve programmed.

If you’re using Night and Day Mode as well as Normal Mode, it’s important to note that you should have at least an hour of Normal Mode between the Night and Day Mode periods. Otherwise, the modes will clash and they won’t work. You must also make sure the system’s clock is set correctly to ensure the settings work at the right time.

Topping up the system

Your central heating system contains at least12 litres of fluid and the fluid level must be about 1 cm above the Min mark in the expansion tank. If it’s below this mark, you can top it up.

If the fluid in your system is magenta in colour, you can top it up with Alde-approved antifreeze. If your heating fluid is not magenta, it is recommended that you top it up with a cup or two of deionised water as a temporary measure before replacing the fluid with Alde-approved antifreeze.

The following antifreeze products are Alde-approved:

  1. Alde Premium G12 EVO Antifreeze/G12 ++
  2. Fuchs Maintain Fricofin DP and Fricofin V
  3. Comma Xstream G40 and GG40
  4. Volkswagen Group G12++ and G13

Replacing the fluid

You should replace your heating fluid every five years. The most effective method of replacement is flushing out the old fluid using the new fluid or clean water if you’re flushing the system.

An Alde Service Partner can assist with fluid replacement. Click here to find your nearest Alde Service Partner.
